rburton: And my bbwarn syntax was wrong too...  With your suggestion, I see that do_instaLl in run.do_install has been properly appended to:

do_install() {
    cmake_do_install
    bbwarn "HERE"
}

and that WARNING: HERE appears in log.do_install

So the rest is a matter of (me) debugging my recipe.  Thanks for the consult and suggestion.
