{"body":"maintenance, etc\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nHow exactly do collectors work in PD? I feel like I don't know whether the items are focal points, relics that offer unique effects, a basis for enhancement, or a tool that they found interesting enough to use as pseudo power conduits.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\n\"Collectors either don’t practice or practice less than the traditional practitioner. Their primary\r\nfocus is in collecting things of a particular type; such as strictly keys,things relating to water, or\r\nsay, ghosts. The greater the unification of the collection, the greater the collector, with larger\r\n& more coherent collections opening up the ability of each item in the collection; their abilities\r\nas a ‘practitioner’ tend to involve being a toolbox, with items for various purposes. Their focus\r\nis often in establishing deals or conquering Others to establish a steady supply of new items.\"\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nRight, but to what end does the toolbox function? Is it like a summoner, but for objects? And how do the objects become magical as opposed to just, idk, another toothpick? Is there a ritual to \"collect\" an object?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\nThat makes it seem like the practitioner uses the items as a focal point with a specific goal in mind, and every time they add to the collection they strengthen the general collection as a whole, meaning each items purpose gradually increases over time.\r\n\r\nSo, it seems like a little bit of everything\r\n\r\nI don't think there'd be a ritual, considering it says non-practitioners can be collectors\r\n\r\nIt seems like its a little bit of everything you said honestly(edited)\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nI'm just a bit confused how the things gain powers, or what those powers are.\r\n\r\nAre they related to the item in a vacuum or the position of the item in relation to the rest of the collection?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\n?\r\n\r\nNot quite sure what you mean on that last one\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWildbow08/30/2018\r\nThere is no position in the collection, exactly.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nFor, an example, a collector of daggers, do all daggers serve the same purpose, or does a sharper dagger hit harder, a stiletto dagger have a longer range, etc...\r\n\r\nDoes a dagger in this example compared to its others in the collection have unique properties that make it distinct?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWildbow08/30/2018\r\nSo if you're a collector, you collect, say, masks.  You start out your collection with two masks you inherited from your family.  They have inherent powers- one belonged to a god, worn by his primitive priests to allow him to speak through them, the other was cursed, had a trickster's soul bound in it, and has since been modified to reduce the deleterious effects of the curse.\r\n\r\nThe more objects you have of a common kind, the easier it is to find others.  You set up a room to hold these items when you're not out and actively practicing, and depending on how the room is set up, you might have pointers to lead you to the nearest such object, or they naturally gravitate toward you.\r\n\r\nAn Other needs help with something, and they're willing to barter.  If they have a mask, they might let it go for less.  If they know where one is, it might spring to mind.\r\n\r\nAnd somehow, a few weeks after you set up the room, two more masks have found their way into your possession.  The Stone God mask lets you speak with authority and Others tend to listen, at least in the short term.  The Trickster mask lets you change your face.  You have the child's rabbit mask, streaked with blood, which makes you swift, but you haven't deciphered just why it failed its previous owner.  A leather mask with zippers for eyeholes and mouthhole makes you feel pain as pleasure and lets you take off any negative effects or spells on you when you remove the mask.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nSo does the collection inherently hold magical properties, or can non-magical objects also be a foundation for a collector?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWildbow08/30/2018\r\nThey might go for non-magical objects of import that they can then turn into magic objects, but that's generally moving beyond the bounds of being a collector.  I suppose you could have non-magic objects and you set them up in the room, and because of the power in the room, the latent energies, benefits, spirits, and the echoes (ghost) of the previous owner might give it some power, but it'd be like raising MR in warframe - you'd need a wide collection with a lot of effort to raise the minimum just a bit.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nAh\r\n\r\nSo do all collectors need a \"room\" for their collection, or is it just continuing the example?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWildbow08/30/2018\r\nRooms make sense.  I can think of vague examples in media (a Japanese horror anime with a name that escapes me) of someone having a case they carry with them.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nI see\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\nHow does that work with a collection thats a little more abstract though?\r\n\r\nLike lets say a collector wanted to make a collection based on love?\r\n\r\nWould they get items that convey how they feel about love, general societal norm of love, or what?(edited)\r\n\r\n^ I suppose subjective makes more sense in the context if all that\r\n\r\nWait, so then are valkyrie/vakalla like this strange crossover of Collector and Necromancer?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWildbow08/30/2018\r\nCloser to necromancer.  Could also mix heroics into that\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nWould it be possible to make the item you collect out of magical ingredients? Say, tattoo collector based on ink from fae\r\n\r\nOr is that closer to alchemy?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWildbow08/30/2018\r\nCloser to alchemy\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\nSo are a bunch of practitioners inadvertently collectors?\r\n\r\nConsidering most families have vast stores of stuff?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nDepends on if you'd call that inadvertent.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWildbow08/30/2018\r\nAbstract collections are ok, but probably harder to do the 'like to like' association.  Most families collect some things associated with their practice, but I wouldn't say 'vast troves of stuff'- what stuff did the Duchamps have?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\nSo, whats the catch with collectors? They basically have incredible versatility, their collection grows passively even when they aren't collecting, if they have their collection room in their demesnes they essentially have enough storage and as their collection gets bigger they get stronger.\r\n\r\nI'm not really seeing a downside here\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nThey need objects to collect and can't branch out from that without weakening potency.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\nBut from the mask example we can see that they can still basically be a swiss army knife while staying in a fairly restricted collection\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nIt's lack of versatility, requiring specific objects, and prevents the ability to really do much outside of the presented scope of the collection. If they don't have a mask for a given situation, they gotta play around with what they do have to fix it\r\n\r\nI think it's the Pact version of Tinkers?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\nExcept their stuff doesnt break frequently and they aren't jacked in to an eldritch mind parasite(edited)\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nUh\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\n?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nI dont know which that refers to, lol\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\nOh, I was talking about shards\r\n\r\nAnd how tinker stuff breaks all the time\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nI'm pretty sure \"gifts\" from Others come with a higher chance of eldritch parasites\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n🔔DutyKhopesh🔔08/30/2018\r\nWell being a tinker has a 100% chance is what toad is saying\r\n\r\nI think\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\neric_bunghole08/30/2018\r\nguys are we just ignoring that the gimp mask from pulp fiction is legit magic\r\n\r\nthat's canon \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nThe m in bdsm is magic\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n🔔DutyKhopesh🔔08/30/2018\r\nPact more like pact into a small enclosed space am I right fellas\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\neric_bunghole08/30/2018\r\nwhen i read the mask collector i thought of the roman tradition of collecting masks of your family. Caesar looking upon the masks of his ancestors or something\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\n\"Ah yes, the gimp mask of my grandfather\"\r\n\r\nSeriously though, that guy would be weird as shit to go up against. Pretend you're just this regular practitioner. You've gone up against Goblin Kings, Proests of Old Gods, Scourges.\r\n\r\nAnd then this kid walks by you, takes off the trickster mask(edited)\r\n\r\nTurns out to be an adult\r\n\r\nPuts on a gimp mask\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4Jerry08/30/2018\r\nTakes off, or puts on a gimp mask?\r\n\r\nA bdsm collector is my next concept\r\n\r\nTo make a reality\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/30/2018\r\nMoans whenever you hit him\r\n\r\nHonestly just become forsworn at that point\r\n\r\nNot the collector\r\n\r\nThe guy fighting him\r\n\r\nThat would be really weird to go against\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\neric_bunghole08/30/2018\r\nthat mask is basically an insta win against ghosts\r\n\r\nIIRC ghosts operate more by making you think youre experiencing pain and stuff, so close to the actual thing that its almost real. Instead of a heart attack, you get all that as pure pleasure\r\n\r\n\r\nAugust 31, 2018\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/31/2018\r\nThat mask is basically gray boys counter when you think about it. They can't be tortured by him, and assuming the loop is long enough they just take off the mask(edited)\r\n\r\nIts actually really broken by the fact that if you get really good at taking it on and off you can't really be permanently harmed\r\n\r\nAnd any damage you do take doesnt hinder you\r\n\r\nHell, assume they know a little sympath magic and mask change could practically happen instantaneously(edited)\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n🔔DutyKhopesh🔔08/31/2018\r\nBonds 1.1 -> bondage 1.1\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/31/2018\r\nBlake: <Sees pizza man get skewered on fence> \"Shit guys, wait for me!\"\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n🔔DutyKhopesh🔔08/31/2018\r\nAnything strong enough to break the effect of a mask like that would make you wish you never put it on when it backfires\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWildbow08/31/2018\r\nWell I mean, you feel pleasure\r\n\r\nBut you've still got a gaping wound in your body.\r\n\r\nYou're just really happy about it\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSmokeyToad08/31/2018\r\nIf the mask user was impaled by a sword, and then somehow the mask was taking off getting rid of any negative effects, would the sword become a part of them, would it just be set off to the side, or would they still just be impaled by the sword?\r\n\r\nWhat about pre existing wounds? Could they just wolverine themselves out of a fatal injury by putting the mask on and then just taking it off?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWildbow08/31/2018\r\nKeep in mind that many items were cursed or are a hair's breadth away from being cursed or being functionally cursed.\r\n\r\nThey come into being somehow, and that somehow doesn't tend to be \"I love humans, let's be super helpful, with nothing in it for me.\"\r\n\r\n\r\nWhen I said deleterious effects, I meant spells & effecty sort of effects, not wounds.  You wouldn't shuck off a knife stabbing.","name":"","extension":"txt","url":"https://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/2LFFg3o7","modified":1542902225,"id":"2LFFg3o7","size":10861,"lines":323,"own_paste":false,"theme":"","date":1542902225}
